Researchers at the Cooney Center and UC Irvine have conducted separate surveys with 1,550 U.S. parents and 600 pre-K—8 teachers to paint a more comprehensive picture of whether, to what extent, and how children ages 3-12 are linking their learning experiences across three locales of interest: home, school, and community. This research illuminates: Where children are learning and with whom; How children are using technology to extend their learning beyond a single setting; What roles parents and teachers are playing in bridging children’s learning across settings, and the extent to which they are working together to do so; Which attitudes, beliefs, [...]

Learning Communities Can Save Colleges—and Engage Remote Students

2020-07-06T08:01:13+01:00July 6th, 2020|Tags: , , , |

In this article, Senegal Alfred Mabry, a senior policy analyst at the Hunt Institute, offers a reflection about how colleges plan to welcome students back for the fall semester—while preparing for a possible second outbreak of the coronavirus that would force classes back online–one thing is for sure: Community is more important than ever. Colleges don’t need new platforms or technology to build community or welcome students. They need to invest in infrastructure that builds relationships. Learning communities—where students work together with a common goal, purpose, or interest—are colleges’ best tool to make online learning hands-on learning. College administrators can make the transition to online [...]

Why Giving Learners Choices is an Important Part of Student Engagement

2020-06-30T14:12:16+01:00June 11th, 2020|Tags: , , , |

In this article, Abbie Forbus Everett, director of Teaching and Learning at KnowledgeWorks, explains the relevance of offering students choices as a good first step in order to help classrooms become more student-centered. Often it’s the highest performing students in the school that have the most opportunities for choice. Learners who are disengaged in school are most in need of relevant work and ownership, yet often these students are offered rote, repetitive work without authentic opportunities for choice. As we know, learning is emotional and when we feel connected to the learning, there is increased engagement. Equipping students to have choices in learning increases the chances that learning [...]

In this article, Thomas Arnett, a senior research fellow in education for the Clayton Christensen Institute, consider two blended learning models: the Enriched Virtual model and the Flipped Classroom model. This models offer a blueprint for how teachers can design instruction to meet the constraints—and even opportunities—of students coming to school in shifts to meet distancing requirements. To illustrate how these proposals work, the author presents some examples of what these types of models look like. Learn more

Brokering Youth Pathways was created to share tools and techniques around the youth development practice of “brokering” or connecting youth to future learning opportunities and resources. Brokering Youth Pathways was produced by Hive Research Lab, an applied research partner of Hive NYC Learning Network —a community of informal educational organizations dedicated to supporting digital learning. “Brokering” is an important equity-oriented practice that out-of-school-time (OST) educators can take up in support of youth learning and development. Brokering is means of supporting identity development, social capital building and long-term, interest-driven learning across settings through actively connecting program participants to new learning opportunities like out of school [...]
