BROKERING YOUTH PATHWAYS. A toolkit for connecting youth to future opportunity

2020-06-10T09:36:23+01:00April 23rd, 2020|Tags: , , , , , |

Brokering Youth Pathways was created to share tools and techniques around the youth development practice of “brokering” or connecting youth to future learning opportunities and resources. Brokering Youth Pathways was produced by Hive Research Lab, an applied research partner of Hive NYC Learning Network —a community of informal educational organizations dedicated to supporting digital learning. “Brokering” is an important equity-oriented practice that out-of-school-time (OST) educators can take up in support of youth learning and development. Brokering is means of supporting identity development, social capital building and long-term, interest-driven learning across settings through actively connecting program participants to new learning opportunities like out of school [...]

Collaborating and Connecting, the emergence of the sharing economy

This book was published by Reisch & Thogersen in the UK. While sharing is a longstanding form of exchange, new forms of sharing have emerged. What is innovative about today’s sharing is that it is a market form in which strangers—rather than kin and communities—exchange goods and services. The contemporary sharing economy creates new ways of provisioning goods and services and opportunities for what we have called connected consumption, relying on peer-to-peer relationships rather than existing market actors to mediate exchanges. In this book chapter by the Connected Learning Alliance, the authors suggest that participation in the sharing economy is motivated [...]

In their own words: what bothers children online? with the EU Kids Online Network

Nearly 10,000 children told these authors in this report about what upsets them and their friends online. Their responses were diverse, revealing a long list of concerns. Pornography (named by 22% of children who told us of risks) and violent content (18%) top children’s online concerns. Overall, boys appear more bothered by violence than girls, while girls are more concerned with contact-related risks. Violence receives less public attention than sexual material, but many children are concerned about violent, aggressive or gory online content. As children told them, video-sharing websites are often associated with violent and pornographic content, along with a range [...]

What (and where) is the ‘learning’ when we talk about learning in the home?

In trying to address the vexed challenge of theorizing learning transfer to make sense of how we learn across social contexts and what learning might mean in more informal domestic circumstances, Stevens and his colleagues offer a series of detailed studies of gaming in the home (Stevens, Satwicz, & McCarthy, 2008). In this report Sefton-Green talk about this work. For him, they argue that we need to look at the “dispositions and purposes” that people bring with them to experiences and then consider “what people make of experiences in other times and places in their lives” (pp. 63–64). Learning, they suggest, [...]

Information and communication technologies and students’ out-of-school learning experiences

The widespread availability of information and communication technologies (ICTs) has generated new activity contexts that provide opportunities and resources for learning, at the same time as expanding the learning potential of traditional contexts such as the family and schools. Within this framework the present study analyses the frequency with which students of three ages (10, 13 and 16 years) participate in ICTmediated activities outside school, as well as the learning experiences associated with this participation. To this end, we used a multimethod approach combining administration of a questionnaire with focus groups and individual interviews. The analysis revealed low rates of participation [...]
